The Canada Startup Visa Guide 2025 program is often considered as a “Too Good To Be True” program for entrepreneurs worldwide who want to establish or expand their business in Canada. As they do not have to worry about investing an exorbitant amount of money or buying a business in Canada. The program was launched in 2013 to attract talented entrepreneurs with innovative business ideas from around the world who can create jobs, drive economic growth, and compete on a global scale. The program aims to provide an expedited immigration process, allowing entrepreneurs to start their businesses in Canada faster than other immigration programs. In contrast to several other countries that offer startup visa programs, Canada is the only country that provides upfront permanent residence status provided you are able to secure a letter of support from a designated business organization and meet all other essential requirements.

This Guide to Canada Startup Visa 2025 will help you navigate the process of applying and succeeding with your business in Canada.

  1. Qualifying Business & Business Ownership
To get a letter of support from a designated organization, each applicant (maximum 5 can apply as owners) must possess at least 10% of the company’s voting rights. The designated organization and all the applicants jointly must hold more than 50% of the voting rights in the startup venture. Moreover, only innovative businesses are eligible to apply for the Canada startup visa.
  2. Sufficient Funds
The Canadian government requires startup visa program applicants to demonstrate their ability to support themselves and their accompanying family members financially when relocating to Canada. As of 2023, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website lists the minimum financial funds requirement between $13,310 – $35,224; the amount varies on the size of the family.
  3. Language Requirements
English and French are both recognised as official languages in Canada. Applicants must demonstrate that they can work and communicate in one of two languages by obtaining a CLB 5 or above in approved language tests from an accredited agency.
  4. Letter of Support from Designated Organisations
Obtaining a letter of support from a Designated Business Organization (DBO) such as business incubator, angle investor groups and venture capital funds is a critical requirement for the Canada startup visa program. It is imperative to choose a business organization that understand your vision and has confidence in your business idea. The letter of support serves as a proof of commitment by a DBO to support the business upon arrival in Canada.

Following are 3 designated organizations that can give you a Letter of support:
    a. Venture Capital (VC) Funds: VCs are required to invest minimum CAD $200,000 to give a letter of support.
    b. Angel Investor Groups: To give a letter of support to any business, angle investor groups are required to invest minimum CAD $75,000 into the business.
    c. Business Incubators: IRCC has not set a minimum investment amount for business incubators to give a letter of support however getting accepted into a training program is indispensable for a business to qualify for letter of support.

  5. Other requirements:
In addition to above mentioned requirements, you also have to undergo a medical examination to prove that you are in good health and do not have any medical conditions that could pose a public health risk in Canada. Moreover, you must provide a police clearance certificate to ensure that you don’t have a criminal record and you are not a security risk to Canada.
